Two of the greatest games ever made are now just $5.99
How could something top the news of Portal 2 being released today? Well, for fans of the legendary Star Control series the news out of GOG.com trumps Valve’s release BIG TIME!
My copy of Portal 2 arrived today but I haven’t even had an opportunity to peel the cellophane from the package since I’ve been fully entrenched in two of the greatest space, action, strategy games of all time; Star Control and Star Control II. For those who weren’t able to experience this game when it was originally release, check out the following video:
This guy actually shares my EXACT sentiment on this title and even goes into the brains and history behind the game (thank you, CymonsGames).
Star Control 1 is a revolutionary space battle with over ten completely different alien ships, each with it’s own set of abilities. This game built upon what had been developed with titles like Archon where each battle requires skill, strategy and a little bit of luck (bless you, or damn you, asteroids). Also included with the game was a brain-altering strategy game that required your armada to traverse a 3D space map (this game was released in 1993 WITH A 3D SPACE MAP) which proved to be too complex for many PC/Genesis gamers at the time. If you were willing to put in the time and brainpower, you were rewarded with one of the richest gaming experiences that still holds up after nearly two decades.
Star Control 2 is a full scale adventure/strategy with about 20 different races and a huge upgradeable carrier. This was my generation’s Mass Effect…in 1995. You could travel through vast space, talk to alien races, land on planets and farm them of their resources. On top of that you deal with inventory management, trading, diplomacy and aggressive alien races. Add to that an incredible story arc with multiple layers, great humor and the opportunity to get busy with the Siren queen…seriously, your hard earned $5.99 will never be better spent.
